Many thanks to our HWRC Volunteers! Cemetery restoration and preservation involves many diverse skills that no one person can attain. We have had help
from many groups including
the District Methodist Youth, Social Services Youth, Lynchburg College Students, Lynchburg College Alums, Jubilee Family Development Center mentoring program
youth, Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge participants and GLHFH summer work camp youth.
Plastic Surgery Associates of Lynchburg Staff. The Plastic Surgery Associates of Lynchburg staff (on the hottest day of the year) cleared, mulched, and transplanted vinca on the hill between the
cemetery and the Hutcherson Early Learning Center, enhancing the drive into the school and the cemetery and improving part of the White Rock Hill neighborhood.
Boy Scout works on Service Project for rank of Eagle Scout. Massey Whorley chose a portion of the cemetery to restore to complete the
requirements for the service project for the highest rank in Boy Scouts - Eagle Scout. Massey is a Life Scout in Troop 29 which meets at Peakland United
Methodist Church. Massey has planned the project in consultation with his Scoutmaster and Historic White Rock Cemetery, Inc. Massey cleared the area of
trees and overgrowth to reveal the gravesites, recovered buried but noticeable headstones and placed them upright at their corresponding grave, filled in sunken
graves, placed bricks at the head and foot of unmarked yet noticeable graves and sowed grass seed. He will make a map of the plot for all visitors to use. Massey
recruited other scouts in his troop, his family and interested friends. He
received his Eagle Scout Award July 28, 2002.
